Nowruz is the first day of the year in Persian Calendar. It’s when the nature wakes up from the winter sleep. Nowruz is not only celebrated in Iran but also in Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, India, Iraq and Turkey. Iranian families usually get together at the grandparents’ house and celebrate the day with other relatives. Iranians have different customs for Nowruz. One of the nowruz customs is haft sin table. Haft literally means seven and sin is like the letter ”s”. Haft sin are seven words that start with sin ( س). They are Sib (Apple), Serkeh (Vinegar), Senjed (Anode) , sir (Garlic), Somagh (Sumac), Sabze (Greenery) and Samanu. Each of these are a symbol. Apple is symbol of health, Sabzeh is symbol of rebirth, Sumaq is symbol of patience, Senjes is symbol of wisdom, samanu is symbol of power, Serkeh is symbol of satisfaction and sir is symbol of medicine.
